How to search for scholarly sources

Too few results?

If you get too few results, there are various ways to modify your search to obtain more hits. Consider the keywords you have used. You might find broader and less specific keywords. You can also try using different features available in most databases.

Searching by the beginning of a word involves replacing the end of a word with a symbol, usually an asterisk. This tells the database to search for all words that start in a certain way. By searching for the beginning of a word, regardless of its ending, you expand your search and can get more hits. For example, searching for creat* will also return results for creativity, create, creating, creator, and creation.

By combining two keywords with OR, you tell the database that you want results containing either one or the other word (or both). If you have multiple synonyms for a keyword, you can combine them with OR. This way, you search for several words simultaneously, broadening your search and getting more results.

For example, if you search for creativity OR imagination, you will get results that include the word creativity and results that include the word imagination.
