Searching

Biology library guide to information searches

The search process

The search process can be summarized in the following 6 steps:

  1. Define the subject/question/problem.
  2. Choose search tool(s)
  3. Build a search query
  4. Do the search
  5. Evaluate the search result
  6. Re-search

During the search, you will likely redefine your problem several times and experiment with different search tools, which means that you will do many different searches. You will probably go through step 1-6 several times before you feel satisfied. Also, you may not always do the steps in exactly this order.
